Based on an excerpt on the titular George King, from Donna Kossy’s collection of articles and stories, ‘Kooks (1994), Da Story of George King is a retelling of the experience of a journalist who attended the Aetherius Society’s prayer/meditation sessions led by spiritual leader, George King: with much of his dialogue actually coming from the real King himself. There is an absurdity in the writer’s portrayal of King and his followers, which I capitalised on in my choice to tell the story with puppets. This is also achieved in the puppets speaking directly to the viewer.
The beliefs upheld by King speak for themselves, the only parts which aren’t from a direct source and are fictionalised by me, is comments from the followers; the Venusian’s homoerotic tendencies (although King did claim to be a contemporary of Jesus of Nazareth); and a scrapped joke about King being married to a toaster.
It is my first silly foray into video art, and an attempt by me: to go away from the overly serious performance art surrounding the self.
